We are continuing our series of news features of  women in the food industry who are putting their skills and experience to great use by helping others in this challenging time.  We spoke to Clara Widdison, Head of Social Inclusion at The Mayor’s Fund for London and she told us about her all women team of staff and volunteers running emergency hubs for children across London.

It goes without saying these are unprecedented times and in times of crisis it is normal to feel overwhelmed, helpless and fearful. Thankfully the food industry is responding to these difficult times with creativity, support and strength. Women in the Food Industry and The Chefs Forum teamed up with one of West London’s largest catering colleges – West London College – Hammersmith & Fulham Campus, for an evening of canapés, Christmas drinks and insightful fireside chats. Guests enjoyed delicious canapés prepared by catering students working with our chef community, plus wine & delicious non alcoholic drinks. There was also sampling of food, drink gifts and party food ideas from a range of award-winning female founders.

Having worked at Le Gavroche in 1990 under Albert Roux, Louise Monaghan returned last year to be part of the closing team. She has reflected on her time there and has written a piece for us at Women In The Food Industry about the contrast between her experiences in her 20’s and 50’s and the vital role that ‘seasoned individuals’, like herself, still have to play in the hospitality industry. Louise is now starting a new venture to encourage over 50’s to work in the hospitality industry. 

The Biskery create bespoke, to order, handmade, artisan biscuits for businesses and consumers. Saskia Roskam shares the story with Women In The Food Industry of how she and Lisa Shepherd (a fellow digital marketeer), came to set up the company, which now offers other mothers flexible work at their award-winning sustainable business.

The new Alcohol Tax came into force on 1st August 2023. We spoke to women in the drinks industry about the tax and what it means for their businesses, consumers and the industry as a whole.
