Women In The Food Industry Blazing a Trail in 2021
In a recent feature in TimeOut, our co-founders, Janie Ash and Mex Ibrahim join a handful of female owned small businesses across the world who are changing the way we eat and drink in 2021. The publication highlights 14 women who are revolutionising the food and drink industry right now.
Journalist Morgan Olsen asks “What does the future of food and drink look like? We’re hopeful that the road ahead is paved with more certainty and recovery than the past year brought. After all, there’s plenty to celebrate in the industry right now, especially when it comes to women around the world who are hellbent on fixing broken systems, fostering inclusivity and building a brighter future.”
We were really delighted to be part of this feature particularly when as we found ourselves alongside some of our favourite UK female led companies – Tessa Clarke and Saasha Celestial-One from OLIO a neighbour-to-neighbour food-sharing platform with over 3 million users and Ellie Webb founder of Caleño drinks a new non-alcoholic spirit that has seen a huge boost in sales throughout lockdown.
Also worth noting are farmers Sussana Phiri and Ruramiso Mashumba who teamed up with advocate Slyvia Tetteh to launch Women Who Farm Africa, a campaign that advocates for women through leadership development training.
It was a pleasure to discover Sana Javeri Kadri founder of Diaspora Co. which cuts out the middleman (and their middlemen) to deliver beautiful spices to consumers straight from small farms. ‘The goal is to undo hundreds of years of oppression and injustice by being super thoughtful, intentional and accountable, by pivoting, growing and evolving constantly,’ Sana said.
The TimeOut feature comes at a great time for our re-launch. “We hope many of our 10,000 fans and followers will take advantage of our discounted membership offer and help us change the food industry for women everywhere.” said Mex. “We’re so proud to offer a host of super benefits including a free quarterly online magazine with industry news and interviews, exclusive discounts and free tickets to industry events and exclusive Women in the Food Industry merchandise plus we’ll promote members on our website, newsletter, quarterly magazine”.
