Great Women on Great British Menu 2023
We are delighted that Great British Menu (GBM) is returning to our screens on 31st January 2023 for series 18. The BBC Two show puts the nation’s most talented chefs to the test. It will air weekly, Tuesdays to Thursdays, 8pm on BBC Two for eight weeks. At Women in the Food Industry we will be interviewing all of the women chefs taking part.

Mehak Kansal – From self taught cook to successful restaurateur
A self taught cook, Mehak Kansal realised her passion for food from a young age. Raised in a family who did not know how to cook, Mehak decided that in order to eat well, she was going to have to teach herself! She therefore spent time travelling around India to learn more about its rich cuisine. Moving from a career in property development, Mehak ran supper clubs before opening a pop-up restaurant in London’s Mayfair and now has a restaurant Bindas Eatery in Westfield’s huge shopping centre in West London. We caught up with her to find out more about her story.

Documentary about an African woman’s food story facing climate change and inequality
When our co-founder Janie Ash, who was born in Zimbabwe, learnt of this film about Anita Chitaya, from neighbouring Malawi, she was inspired to discover her food journey and the documentary film on her fight for gender equality and the challenges of climate change.

Moving towards a diverse and sustainable fishing industry

Hundreds of votes from chefs, food writers, editors, top industry suppliers and critics were counted to reveal the country’s best restaurants. This year’s Estrella Damm List of Top 100 Restaurants shows a number of inspiring women running award-winning restaurants including the restaurant which took the top slot Ynyshir run by Amelia Eiríksson and her head chef partner, Gareth Ward.

There’s an all female final of amateur bakers for the competition to find The Queen’s Jubilee Pudding to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne. Five bakes were selected from over 5,000 entries from across the country in a contest run by Fortnum & Mason and the Big Jubilee Lunch.
