As Mental Health Awareness Week approaches (13-19 May 2024) Ambassador of Women In the Food Industry and Writer, Antonia Lloyd, talks to the Women Head Chefs making waves in their restaurant kitchens and why wellbeing matters.

At Women in the Food Industry we are interviewing the strong female line-up of chefs from across Britain competing on Great British Menu to serve their dish at the final banquet. Continuing our series, our co-founder, Mecca Ibrahim, interviewed Kim Ratcharoen Senior Sous Chef at 3 Michelin-starred Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London. Originally from Suratthani, Thailand Kim is representing London and the South East.

We are delighted that Great British Menu (GBM) is returning to our screens on 1st February 2022 for series 17. The BBC Two show puts the nation’s most talented chefs to the test. This year GBM has had its most significant re-vamp with a brand new panel of judges including food entrepreneur, Nisha Katona.

At Women in the Food Industry we were pleased to see women making up almost a third of the chefs from across Britain who will be competing to serve their dish at the final banquet. 

A Woman’s Place Is In The Kitchen – the long-awaited memoir of British culinary star Sally Abé is out this June and it’s a searingly honest account of a young cook’s ascent to the top of the restaurant industry. Ambassador of Women In the Food Industry and Writer, Antonia Lloyd, spends a weekend cooking from Anna Haugh’s newly released cookbook – Cooking with Anna: : Modern Home Cooking with Irish Heart. Anna has created a wonderful debut cookbook that will expand any family cook’s repertoire with a light touch.

Women in the Food Industry hosted an event centred around the launch of Sally Abé’s debut memoir – A Woman’s Place is in the Kitchen – a chef’s dispactches from behind the pass. Sally’s book is about her journey of becoming an award-winning chef in the brutal world of restaurant kitchens. It is also a stirring manifesto which shows how we can change them for the better. On 11th June we met an inspiring panel of women working to bring hope for the culinary landscape’s future.

UPDATE – 20th March 2024 – Kate Austen made history & became the first woman in Great British Menu’s 19 year history to have her main course reach the banquet. Congratulations Kate – we look forward to watching you prepare your stunning Olympian dish for the banquet at the British ambassador’s residence in Paris to celebrate the Olympics and Paralympics – BBC2 22nd March 7pm.

Ambassador of Women In the Food Industry, Antonia Lloyd, talks to Clare Smyth MBE, the first and only British woman with 3 Michelin stars, at her London restaurant Core by Clare Smyth, and the new President of the Bocuse D’Or UK.

Continuing our series of interviews with the women on Great British Menu, our co-founder, Mecca Ibrahim, interviewed Elly Wentworth, Head Chef at The Angel, Darmouth. Elly is representing the South West.

From working in a Michelin starred kitchen with chefs such as Anna Haugh to helping develop ready meals for Tesco, development chef Phillipa Armitage-Mattin has seen two incredibly different ends of professional kitchens.  Our co-founder, Mecca Ibrahim, asked Chef Philli how she made the move and what it’s like producing meals for a mass market after the precision of working in two of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants.
